Installation of the IBM TS3500 tape library at CSCS

Friday, March 1st, 2013

In early 2013 an automated tape library (IBM TS3500) was installed at CSCS increasing the storage capacity up to  ~ 27.4 PB   petabytes of uncompressed data. The library is composed of 16 frames plus 2 service bays cabinets and can contain up to 18‘257 tapes moved by two robots (in the actual configuration there are 24 LTO5 drives). The Library is part of the Backup System (IBM Tivoli  Storage Manager) and is integrated into the Hierarchical Storage Management environment (HSM) which put on tapes files that have not been accessed since long time.

The movie shows the different phases of the installation of the tape library: from positioning the first frame to loading the tapes.

Cray Sonexion 1300 Storage System evaluation

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

We recently finished the evaluation of the new Cray Sonexion system. The testbed is using Lustre 2.1.1 connected to their Cray XE6. This study covered the entire process of installation, configuration and tuning of the Lustre file system and integration into the Cray XE6. The software stack provided with the system enabled us to install a working Lustre environment within hours. Our IO benchmarks confirmed the specifications provided by the product  brochures and in actual fact in some cases we got even better results. With IOzone we measured more than 3 GB/s read and write performance with 1 MB block size.
